Rivian’s R2 — the sub-$50k electric SUV aimed squarely at the Tesla Model Y — finally has real prices, real range numbers, and real deliveries. First Performance models reached customers in June 2026, the R2 Standard arrives in early 2027, and the ~$45,000 entry version is now scheduled for summer 2027. Here’s the full picture for U.S. buyers deciding between waiting and buying now.
Reservation demand set the stage: Rivian opened the R2 order book with a $100 refundable deposit in 2024, and the company says it collected roughly 300,000 reservations. That demand, plus a YouTuber’s decision to grab an inventory 2026 Model Y Performance while he waits for his December R2 delivery, frames the real question American buyers are asking: is the R2 worth waiting for, and how does it actually compare to the Model Y it’s chasing?
The lineup: four trims, one clear winner
Rivian restructured the R2 lineup around three trims plus a late-arriving entry model. The Performance with Launch Package ($57,990) debuted first in spring 2026 — 656 hp, 0–60 in 3.6 seconds, 330 miles of EPA range, dual-motor AWD, and a semi-active suspension. The Premium ($53,990, late 2026) drops to 450 hp with the same 330-mile range. The Standard ($48,490, first half of 2027) is the single-motor RWD Long Range with 350 hp and the best range in the lineup at 345 miles EPA. A final Standard variant around $45,000 with 275+ miles arrives in late 2027.
| R2 trim | Price | Power | 0–60 | Range (EPA est.) | Arrival |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Performance + Launch | $57,990 | 656 hp AWD | 3.6 s | 330 mi | Spring 2026 (delivering) |
| Premium | $53,990 | 450 hp AWD | 4.6 s | 330 mi | Late 2026 |
| Standard (RWD Long Range) | $48,490 | 350 hp RWD | 5.9 s | 345 mi | H1 2027 |
| Standard entry | ~$45,000 | — | — | 275+ mi | Late 2027 |
SIGNAL: The $48,490 Standard is the sleeper: more EPA range than the Model Y Long Range (345 vs 327 miles) with a real SUV body, rear drop glass, fold-flat seats, and 9.6 inches of ground clearance — at a price right in the Model Y’s premium-trim band. Rivian says every R2 is cash-flow positive per unit and its material costs are roughly half the R1’s. That’s the “we’re not a startup anymore” statement.
What you actually get for the money
The R2 is about 15 inches shorter and roughly 2,000 pounds lighter than the R1S, with 90.1 cubic feet of total enclosed storage, a front trunk, fold-flat rear seats, and the signature rear drop glass that lowers into the liftgate for hauling long gear. Inside, there’s 200 sparse TOPS of edge-AI compute, a context-aware steering wheel, and built-in hardware for Rivian Autonomy+ — L2+ hands-free assisted driving across 3.5 million miles of U.S. and Canadian roads, included free on the Performance Launch package. Towing runs 3,500–4,400 pounds depending on trim.

The Model Y comparison buyers care about
Against the 2026 Model Y (Standard RWD $39,990 / Premium AWD $48,990), the R2 costs more at the entry but counters with real off-road capability, superior ground clearance, and arguably better packaging for families and campers. The Model Y counters with a vastly larger Supercharger network, lower starting price, and 0.9–3.9% APR financing (the Performance trim the video’s owner bought carries 3.9%). Rivian’s answer is the R2’s lifetime-free Autonomy+ hardware and the fact that its fold-flat rear makes for a better camp sleeper — a difference the YouTuber in the source video explicitly calls out after sleeping in a Model Y at an angle.
The R2 isn’t trying to be a cheaper R1S — it’s trying to be the SUV Tesla Model Y buyers secretly want when they need ground clearance, a fold-flat bed, and hands-free driving on American highways. The reservation list says enough people agree; the 2026–2027 delivery ramp will say whether Rivian can build them fast enough.
How many R2 reservations are there?
Rivian reported roughly 300,000 reservations for the R2 after opening the book in 2024 with a $100 deposit. Early customers with reservations get priority for the Performance Launch Edition deliveries.
When can I actually get one?
Performance is delivering now (June 2026 onward, with a 2026 year-end target of 20,000–25,000 R2s). Premium arrives late 2026, Standard RWD in the first half of 2027, and the ~$45,000 entry version in late 2027.
Where is the R2 built?
At Rivian’s existing Normal, Illinois plant (expanded capacity). A new Georgia plant at Stanton Springs North is expected to start production around 2028 and would add R3 hatchback production.
