Cadillac Optiq-V: Performance and Power
The Cadillac Optiq-V is set to redefine expectations for electric SUVs, delivering performance that rivals and often surpasses traditional gas-powered vehicles. Recent announcements from General Motors (GM) underscore a commitment to both electric and combustion engine technologies, despite some initial skepticism. The unveiling of the Optiq-V, a high-performance variant of the standard Optiq, demonstrates GM’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle (EV) capabilities.
The standard Optiq is already a capable vehicle, boasting 300 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque from its dual-motor, all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. However, the Optiq-V elevates performance to a new level. With dual electric motors churning out an impressive 515 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque, the Optiq-V achieves a 0-60 miles per hour time of just 3.5 seconds in Velocity Max mode. This blistering acceleration places it among the quickest GM vehicles ever produced, regardless of powertrain. To put this into perspective, it’s only two-tenths of a second behind the Lyriq-V, which was previously crowned the quickest Cadillac.
| Feature | Standard Optiq | Optiq-V |
|---|---|---|
| Horsepower | 300 hp | 515 hp |
| Torque | 354 lb-ft | 650 lb-ft |
| 0-60 mph | N/A | 3.5 seconds (Velocity Max mode) |
| Estimated Range | 302 miles (EPA est.) | 275 miles (GM est.) |
The NACS Charging Transition
A significant advancement for the Optiq-V is its adoption of the Tesla-developed North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, making it the first GM EV to feature this from the factory. This transition provides Optiq-V owners with access to a broader network of charging stations, including Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network. However, this transition isn’t without its initial challenges.
One notable issue is the placement of the Optiq-V’s charging port on the front-left fender. Tesla Superchargers are primarily designed for vehicles with charging ports located at the back-left or front-right. This discrepancy may require Optiq-V drivers to double park at some V3 Supercharger stations, especially those with shorter cables designed specifically for Tesla vehicles. This inconvenience will persist until Tesla upgrades its chargers to the newer V4 dispensers, which are optimized for all EVs and equipped with longer cables.
Mack Hogan, Deputy Editor at InsideEVs, has pointed out that the NACS transition is not a panacea for all EV charging challenges. EV owners still need to be knowledgeable about charging protocols and potential issues. While the NACS port expands charging options, it doesn’t eliminate the need for careful planning and awareness when charging on the go.
Aesthetics, Features, and Pricing
Beyond its impressive performance and charging capabilities, the Cadillac Optiq-V also boasts a range of aesthetic and functional enhancements. The exterior design is more aggressive, featuring a blacked-out front bumper, lower lip, and striking 21-inch wheels. Cadillac offers an optional carbon fiber package that includes a front splitter, rear diffuser, and spoiler, further enhancing its sporty appearance. The Optiq-V will also be available in two limited-edition metallic colors: Magnus Metal Frost (gray) and Deep Ocean Tintcoat (blue), adding to its exclusivity.
Inside, the Optiq-V comes loaded with features not found on the base model. These include a configurable V-Mode, similar to Hyundai’s N Mode or BMW’s M1/M2 settings, allowing drivers to customize the vehicle’s performance characteristics. A track-optimized Competitive Mode and Launch Control are also included for those seeking maximum performance. Brembo brakes with red or blue calipers provide enhanced stopping power, and GM’s Super Cruise advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) comes standard, offering a hands-free driving experience on compatible roads.
The Optiq-V starts at $68,795, including destination charges. While this is $14,405 more than the base Optiq AWD, it’s approximately $11,000 less than the Lyriq-V, which starts at $80,090. This positions the Optiq-V as a compelling option for those seeking high performance and advanced features in a more accessible package. While the Lyriq-V remains the quickest road-legal Cadillac, the Optiq-V, along with the Chevy Blazer EV SS, demonstrates GM’s commitment to delivering high-performance EVs that challenge the notion that performance is exclusive to gas-powered vehicles.
