In recent times, many automotive manufacturers have begun to rebrand themselves as “mobility companies,” aiming to meet transportation needs beyond traditional car ownership. However, the transition from ambitious concepts to tangible products often stalls. Rivian, an electric vehicle (EV) startup, is breaking this mold by announcing the launch of a new venture.
Launch of Also
Rivian has unveiled Also, a new electric micromobility company that aims to provide innovative transportation solutions for urban dwellers. This initiative is set to produce its flagship product by 2026, focusing on alternatives to traditional vehicles. Chris Yu, the president of Also, emphasized that the goal is to deliver a market-ready product rather than just concepts, stating, “The intent is not to show concepts. It’s to show a product that you can buy.”
Product Details and Vision
While specific product details remain under wraps, Yu indicated that Also will adopt Rivian’s vertically integrated approach, focusing on electrification and software-driven solutions. The company originated as a “skunkworks” project within Rivian about three and a half years ago, evolving into a standalone entity with significant investment from Rivian. The products will include microcars, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers, designed to navigate urban environments efficiently.
Addressing Urban Mobility Challenges
Yu identified the pressing need for sustainable urban transport solutions, particularly in densely populated cities that are increasingly restricting car access. He cited Paris’s efforts to limit car traffic in its city center as a prime example of the shift towards micromobility. “There’s this pent-up demand to do better than sitting in traffic,” Yu remarked, highlighting the need for efficient alternatives for short trips, such as grocery shopping or school drop-offs.
Market Potential for Micromobility
According to a 2024 McKinsey report, the micro-mobility sector is experiencing rapid growth in the U.S. and globally. The adoption of shared bicycles, e-scooters, and other non-car solutions has surged by 8% to 17% annually since 2018. As cities embrace these solutions to meet climate goals, the demand for alternatives to car ownership continues to rise. Rivian’s approach to building a common, adaptable platform for Also’s products promises to streamline production and enhance the user experience.
| Year | Growth Rate | Mobility Solutions |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | – | Shared bicycles, e-scooters |
| 2019 | 8% | – |
| 2020 | 12% | – |
| 2021 | 17% | – |
As Also prepares to launch its first product, it represents a significant shift for Rivian and the automotive industry as a whole. By focusing on micromobility and sustainable transportation solutions, Also aims to address urban challenges and meet the evolving needs of consumers. The company’s commitment to direct sales and in-house production mirrors Rivian’s successful model, positioning it well for future growth.
