Titan Mining Embarks on Natural Flake Graphite Production in New York
Titan Mining, a key player in zinc concentrate production at its Empire State Mine in New York, has officially commenced construction of a fully permitted commercial demonstration facility for producing natural flake graphite. This initiative marks a significant step for New York mining and the broader U.S. materials sector. The strategic move leverages the existing infrastructure of the zinc mill to diversify into graphite production, a critical material for various industries, including electric vehicles and energy storage.

Kilbourne Project: A Strategic Move Towards Graphite Independence
The new facility is set to initially process 60,000 tons of feed annually from the Kilbourne Project, yielding 1,000-1,200 tons of graphite concentrate per year. Titan Mining’s long-term vision includes scaling up to a production capability of 40,000 tons annually. This ambitious target is designed to significantly reduce the United States’ reliance on foreign sources for natural flake graphite, a crucial element in lithium-ion batteries and other advanced technologies.
The preliminary economic assessment (PEA) for the Kilbourne Project, expected in the second half of the year, will provide further insights into the project’s financial viability and potential returns. This assessment is eagerly awaited by investors and industry analysts alike.
| Metric | Value | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Initial Feed Processing Capacity | 60,000 | Tons per Year |
| Initial Graphite Concentrate Production | 1,000-1,200 | Tons per Year |
| Target Graphite Production Capacity | 40,000 | Tons per Year |
Financial Backing and Future Scalability
Titan Mining is adopting a measured approach to scaling its graphite production. The company plans to thoroughly evaluate product qualifications through ongoing technical and economic studies. Securing offtake agreements will be a priority before committing to major capital investments, ensuring a stable market for its graphite products.
The construction of the demonstration facility is supported by equipment financing from the St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency (SLCIDA) and the Development Authority of the North Country (DANC). This financial backing highlights the regional importance of the project and its potential to stimulate economic growth in Northern New York.
According to Titan CEO Don Taylor, this initiative underscores the scalability and optionality of their district. The ability to produce both zinc and graphite on a single site positions the company uniquely to supply critical materials from a fully permitted platform with established infrastructure.
