Next-Generation Alfa Romeo Stelvio
The next-generation Alfa Romeo Stelvio has been spotted undergoing testing in Sweden, camouflaged to conceal its new design. Notably, this prototype seems to lack visible exhaust pipes and features a completely closed grille, suggesting that it is an all-electric vehicle (EV). This shift marks a significant change for Alfa Romeo as it moves away from the $2 billion Giorgio platform to the STLA Large platform for both the Stelvio and the Giulia.
Transition to Electric Vehicles
As the global electric vehicle market continues to evolve, many automakers are adopting flexible strategies for their upcoming models by offering both hybrid and fully electric options. Alfa Romeo is set to embrace this approach with its new SUV and sedan, which will replace the beloved Giulia and Stelvio models that have resonated with fans. These new vehicles will be built on the STLA Large platform and provide consumers with choices between combustion engines and fully electric powertrains.
While there had been no official announcement regarding an electric variant, teaser images of the next-generation Stelvio have seemingly confirmed this direction. The prototype, captured in snowy conditions, showcases features indicative of an electric vehicle, such as the absence of tailpipes and the presence of an orange high-voltage sticker on the windshield.
Design and Features
The design of the prototype emphasizes aerodynamics, with the front almost entirely closed off, save for a small air intake at the bottom of the bumper. The door handles are designed to be flush, further contributing to its streamlined appearance. While the electric nature of the vehicle is not definitively confirmed by these features, the overall design suggests a strong focus on aerodynamics.
One notable aspect of the prototype is its split headlight design, featuring LED daytime running lights positioned above smaller headlights. This trend, while popular in contemporary automotive design, has sparked mixed opinions among enthusiasts. Nevertheless, if any brand can successfully navigate such design choices, it is Alfa Romeo, known for its distinctive styling.
Teaser images also reveal a side profile that appears larger than the current model while retaining the fastback-like roofline characteristic of the existing Stelvio. In some shots, the prototype is seen maneuvering sideways, hinting at the potential for the rear-wheel-drive layout to continue in the next generation.
STLA Large Platform and Performance
The new Stelvio and Giulia will leverage the STLA Large platform, which also underpins models like the Jeep Wagoneer S and the Dodge Charger Daytona EV. Although the Charger has faced criticism for its performance limitations, the STLA platform allows for extensive customization, enabling Alfa Romeo to deliver a distinct driving experience.
This platform supports both 400- and 800-volt architectures, accommodating a battery pack of up to 118 kilowatt-hours. Stellantis claims that vehicles built on this platform can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in the “2-second range,” and it can support various powertrains, including plug-in hybrids. With the Stelvio’s full unveiling anticipated later this year, it is set to hit the market in 2026 alongside the Giulia, which is expected to take on a taller form factor akin to a larger Italian version of the Polestar 2.
