General Motors, Pilot Company, and EVgo are on a mission to enhance the electric vehicle (EV) charging experience across the United States. By strategically installing DC fast chargers at over 130 locations in more than 25 states, these companies are making it easier for EV drivers to travel long distances without worrying about charging. This initiative is particularly focused on high-traffic routes, utilizing the familiar layout of gas stations to provide a seamless charging experience.
Expansion of the Charging Network
The collaboration between General Motors, EVgo, and Pilot Company, announced in 2022, aims to install up to 2,000 DC fast chargers across 500 Pilot and Flying J locations. As of now, the number of operational charging stations has surpassed 130, with many more expected to be added in the coming months. This rapid growth indicates a strong commitment to building a robust EV charging network that caters to the needs of drivers on the go.
Innovative Charging Technology
The DC fast chargers installed by EVgo are dual-cord units capable of delivering up to 350 kilowatts of power. This allows for efficient charging, especially when only one EV is connected to a charger. In cases where two vehicles are charging simultaneously, the power is shared, ensuring that both vehicles receive adequate energy. Additionally, the chargers support Plug-and-Charge technology, which simplifies the payment process by allowing drivers to charge without needing to manually complete payment transactions, provided they have set everything up in advance.
Convenience and Amenities
The charging stations are strategically located along major highways, including I-75 from Michigan to Georgia, and regional routes such as Minneapolis to Milwaukee and Dallas to Nashville. These locations not only provide easy access to charging but also offer premium amenities that enhance the travel experience. EV drivers can enjoy modernized restrooms, comfortable lounges, free Wi-Fi, and various dining options while their vehicles charge, making road trips more enjoyable and less stressful.
Wade Sheffer, VP of GM Energy, emphasizes the importance of this initiative, stating, “Spring break is all about hitting the road, making memories, and enjoying the journey—not worrying about where to charge.” The collaboration between GM, Pilot, and EVgo is designed to give EV drivers the confidence to embark on longer trips, knowing that charging will be convenient and accessible.
