Orders for the all-wheel drive Jeep Avenger, officially named the Avenger 4xe, have now opened. This city crossover is equipped with an innovative electric all-wheel drive (eAWD) system, marking a significant enhancement for Jeep’s smallest vehicle. Despite being a brand synonymous with off-road vehicles, Jeep has been offering a front-wheel-drive version of the Avenger in Europe for the past two years. However, this is about to change as the order books are finally open for the all-wheel-drive variant, with deliveries set to commence in May. Unfortunately for American enthusiasts, the Avenger 4xe will not be available in the United States.
2. Powertrain and Performance
The Avenger 4xe features a compelling powertrain that combines a 1.2-liter turbocharged engine producing 136 horsepower with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. This engine drives the front wheels while being complemented by two electric motors—one located at the front and another at the rear—allowing for electric all-wheel drive capabilities. Each motor contributes an additional 28 horsepower (21 kilowatts), resulting in a total system output of 145 horsepower. This powertrain configuration enables the B-segment crossover to accelerate from zero to 62 miles per hour in just 9.5 seconds, reaching a top speed of 120 miles per hour, which is 6 mph faster than the front-wheel-drive e-Hybrid version.
3. eAWD System Explained
Jeep’s eAWD system is primarily designed for low-speed driving conditions. The rear electric motor can provide up to 28 horsepower to the rear wheels when necessary, but it automatically disengages at speeds above 56 mph (90 kph). Between 18 mph and 56 mph, the rear motor activates only when needed, while below 18 mph, it operates continuously to maintain a balanced 50:50 torque split between the front and rear wheels. This system enhances the vehicle’s traction and stability in urban driving scenarios, making it ideal for city environments.
4. Features and Specifications
The Jeep Avenger 4xe boasts several enhancements over the standard model. It offers approximately a quarter-inch (10 millimeters) more ground clearance, allowing it to traverse rough terrains more effectively. Additionally, it can ford water up to 15.7 inches (400 mm) deep. The vehicle is equipped with anti-scratch bumpers, roof rails, all-season Goodyear tires, underbody protection, and a rear tow hook, making it a versatile option for both urban and light off-road adventures. Inside, the Avenger 4xe features a stylish black headliner and waterproof seat covers, enhancing its practicality for various conditions.
