Chinese smartphone powerhouse Xiaomi is making waves in the automotive industry as it pivots towards electric vehicles. The company has not only introduced cars that are technologically advanced and efficient but has also prioritized safety. The Xiaomi SU7 electric sedan has recently secured a five-star rating in the C-NCAP safety and crash test, achieving the highest scores among all vehicles assessed in 2024. This remarkable accomplishment comes in the car’s inaugural year on the market.
Xiaomi’s First Model: The SU7
Launched in March 2024, the Xiaomi SU7 is the company’s first foray into the automotive sector. It has quickly gained popularity, with sales reaching an impressive 186,112 units. The demand for the SU7 continues to outstrip supply, resulting in an 11-month waiting period for prospective buyers. This electric sedan showcases Xiaomi’s commitment to innovation and quality in the electric car market.
Safety Ratings and Performance
The C-NCAP (China New Car Assessment Program) is responsible for evaluating vehicle safety in China, similar to Euro NCAP and other global organizations. They provide ratings based on various criteria, including the protection of vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and the effectiveness of active safety systems. The Xiaomi SU7 Max, an all-wheel-drive variant, has particularly stood out, achieving a remarkable 93.5% safety performance rating, the highest among all cars tested in 2024.
The SU7 Max also excelled in the Active Safety category with a score of 95.25%. It features cutting-edge technology, including a Lidar system developed by Hesai and the Xiaomi Pilot Max driver assistance system, enhancing both safety and driving experience. Its retail price is set at 299,900 yuan, approximately 40,000 euros.
Market Performance and Demand
The Xiaomi SU7 has not only made a mark in terms of safety but has also outperformed competitors in sales. It has sold more units in China than the widely popular Tesla Model 3, showcasing its appeal among consumers. The SU7 Max achieved notable scores of 94.31% for occupant protection and 90.42% for pedestrian safety, significantly surpassing the average ratings in these categories. This success indicates that Xiaomi is serious about establishing itself as a formidable player in the electric vehicle market.
Future Plans: The YU7 SUV
Building on the momentum of the SU7, Xiaomi is set to introduce its second electric vehicle, the YU7 SUV. This upcoming model is anticipated to further solidify Xiaomi’s position in the automotive industry. The company is clearly committed to innovation and excellence, proving that it is not just a tech giant but a serious contender in the electric car arena.
