Design and Dimensions of the 2026 Lexus ES
The all-new eighth-generation Lexus ES has made its debut at Auto Shanghai, marking a significant shift in both powertrain options and design philosophy. The 2026 Lexus ES introduces a bolder aesthetic, moving away from the traditionally understated elegance of its predecessors. This new model is available as either a hybrid or a full-on electric vehicle (EV), catering to the growing demand for eco-friendly transportation. The design, while drawing inspiration from the LF-ZC concept, presents a more assertive road presence with unique styling cues.
One notable change is the increased size. The new ES has grown by 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) compared to the previous generation, now measuring 202.4 inches (5.14 meters) in length. The wheelbase has also been extended to 116.1 inches (2.95 meters), contributing to a more spacious interior and potentially enhanced ride comfort. Visually, the electric and hybrid variants are largely identical, save for an extra cooling slat that connects the headlights on the EV model, a subtle but functional distinction.
Exploring the Powertrain Options: Electric and Hybrid
The 2026 Lexus ES offers a diverse range of powertrain options to suit different preferences and needs. For the first time, a pure electric variant joins the lineup, signaling Lexus’s commitment to electrification. While combustion engines are still available, they are exclusively offered in hybrid configurations, featuring four-cylinder engines.
The electric range includes two models: the ES 350e and the ES 500e. The ES 350e is equipped with a single 221-horsepower motor driving the front wheels, achieving a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration time of 8.9 seconds. The ES 500e, on the other hand, boasts a dual-motor setup producing a more robust 338 hp, significantly reducing the acceleration time to 5.9 seconds. The front-wheel-drive ES EV claims a CLTC range of 379 miles (610 km), which is expected to translate to approximately 300 miles (483 km) under the EPA cycle in the United States.
For those preferring a hybrid, two options are available, although only the more powerful ES 350h is slated for the American market. This model combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 244 hp and a 0-62 mph time of 7.8 seconds. All-wheel drive is offered as an option for enhanced traction and stability. The other hybrid variant features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, producing a total system output of 194 hp and a slower 0-62 mph time of 9.4 seconds.
| Model | Powertrain | Horsepower | 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ES 350e | Electric (Single Motor, FWD) | 221 hp | 8.9 seconds |
| ES 500e | Electric (Dual Motor) | 338 hp | 5.9 seconds |
| ES 350h | Hybrid (2.5L, AWD Optional) | 244 hp | 7.8 seconds |
Inside the 2026 Lexus ES: Interior and Technology
The interior of the new Lexus ES exudes a sense of posh minimalism, designed to create a premium and comfortable environment for both the driver and passengers. One notable change is the replacement of the traditional Lexus badge with a “LEXUS” script, aiming to elevate the perceived luxury and exclusivity of the vehicle.
Technologically, the 2026 ES is well-equipped. The driver benefits from a 12.3-inch digital display, providing essential vehicle information in a clear and customizable format. The infotainment system is displayed on a large 14.0-inch central screen, offering intuitive access to navigation, entertainment, and vehicle settings. Furthermore, an optional second 14.0-inch display is available for the front passenger, enhancing their engagement and control over the in-car experience. This dual-screen setup is a testament to Lexus’s commitment to providing a modern and user-friendly interface.
Platform and Performance Dynamics
The 2026 Lexus ES is built on a further development of the TNGA GA-K platform. Lexus emphasizes that this platform has been significantly stiffened compared to previous iterations, which should translate to a more responsive and agile driving experience. The enhanced rigidity aims to improve handling and overall vehicle dynamics.
However, the agility of the Lexus ES 500e, in particular, may be tempered by its weight. Tipping the scales at 4,861 pounds (2,200 kilograms), the ES 500e’s heft could potentially impact its sportiness and responsiveness. Despite the added weight, the expectation is that the improved platform stiffness will contribute to a more engaging and refined driving experience. The new ES is anticipated to debut in the U.S. and Europe by mid-2026.
