Nissan is set to make waves in the electric vehicle market with the introduction of an adventure-focused electric SUV, slated for production in Canton, Mississippi, starting in 2027 or early 2028. During a recent event, I had the opportunity to see this SUV up close, and it embodies the modern buyer’s desire for a stylish yet functional vehicle.
Nissan’s Electric SUV
Nissan’s upcoming electric SUV draws inspiration from the beloved Xterra, though it aims to deliver a more refined experience compared to its rugged predecessor. While the next-generation Leaf will launch in the next year, this new electric crossover is generating significant excitement. Nissan has confirmed that it is developing an off-road EV that captures the adventurous spirit of the Xterra, and I can attest that it looks fantastic.
Design and Features
At Nissan’s “Full Speed Ahead” event in Atsugi, Japan, select journalists were given a glimpse of the full lineup of upcoming products, including the next Sentra, Leaf, and Rogue. However, the standout was a compact SUV, reminiscent of the Subaru Outback, featuring design elements that pay homage to the Xterra. Although we were not permitted to take photos, Nissan showcased a teaser image that hinted at the SUV’s design.
The SUV boasts a roof rack, knobby all-terrain tires, and an innovative integrated roof basket, all contributing to its rugged aesthetic. Its design evokes a blend of the Hyundai Santa Fe, Subaru Outback Wilderness, and the Xterra itself, creating an appealing look that resonates with adventure seekers.
Production and Release Timeline
Production of this electric SUV will take place in Canton, Mississippi, where the Altima and Frontier are currently manufactured. Nissan has announced that the vehicle is expected to launch in the fiscal year 2027, which in Japan spans from April 1, 2027, to March 31, 2028. This timeline aligns with the growing demand for electric vehicles in the rugged crossover segment.
Naming Controversy
A significant question remains regarding the name of this new SUV. While the name “Xterra” is under consideration, Nissan executives are weighing whether it accurately reflects the vehicle’s positioning as a more premium and refined product. Unlike the old Xterra, which was a simple body-on-frame off-roader, this new model is designed for versatility, targeting gravel roads and hiking trails rather than extreme rock crawling. Nissan’s Chief Planning Officer for the Americas, Ponz Pandikuthira, emphasized the need for a name that resonates with the vehicle’s adventurous spirit while also appealing to modern consumers.
The company has even trademarked the Xterra name, leaving enthusiasts to ponder whether it will make a comeback or if Nissan will forge a new identity for its adventurous electric vehicle.
