Tesla Model Y Price Drop: Launch Series Discontinued
The Tesla Model Y has become more accessible in the United States following Tesla’s decision to discontinue the Launch Series trim. This move effectively lowers the entry price for the popular electric crossover. The Launch Series, which was previously available with all the premium features, including the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system, carried a price tag of $59,990 before destination and taxes. Now, with its removal, the focus shifts to the more affordable Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) variant.
This decision, implemented recently, marks a significant change in Tesla’s U.S. product lineup. The Launch Series, while offering a comprehensive suite of features, was available for a relatively short period. Discontinuing it simplifies the Model Y offerings and positions the Long Range AWD as the primary option for American consumers.
The Long Range AWD Takes Center Stage
With the Launch Series gone, the Long Range AWD Model Y now starts at $48,990, excluding destination fees and taxes. While this represents a more affordable entry point, it’s important to note the differences between the two trims. The Long Range AWD does not include the Full Self-Driving (FSD) system as standard. Customers can add FSD for an additional $8,000 or opt for a subscription service. The Launch Series also boasted unique features like a vegan suede interior and distinctive badging, which are absent in the Long Range AWD.
Performance-wise, the Long Range AWD has a slightly slower 0 to 60 mph acceleration time of 4.6 seconds, compared to the Launch Series’ 4.1 seconds. While Tesla hasn’t specified changes to power or torque, European versions of the refreshed Model Y Dual Motor Long Range deliver approximately 370 horsepower and 363 pound-feet of torque. The EPA-estimated range remains competitive at 327 miles with 19-inch all-season tires. Choosing 20-inch wheels reduces the range to 303 miles.
| Feature | Model Y Launch Series | Model Y Long Range AWD |
|---|---|---|

| Full Self-Driving (FSD) | Included | Optional ($8,000 or subscription) |
| 0-60 mph | 4.1 seconds | 4.6 seconds |
| Interior | Vegan Suede | Standard |

Options, Incentives, and Market Dynamics
Tesla offers a range of options to customize the Model Y Long Range AWD. These include a $1,000 tow hitch, $35 center console trays, $240 all-weather floor mats, and a $500 roof rack. Currently, a seven-seat configuration is not available. A significant advantage for eligible buyers is the $7,500 federal tax credit, which effectively reduces the starting price to $41,490.
The Model Y has historically been Tesla’s best-selling vehicle, even achieving the title of the world’s best-selling car overall at one point. However, recent trends indicate a shift in the market. Tesla’s global sales have been declining, potentially influenced by factors such as public perception of CEO Elon Musk. Some Tesla owners are reportedly trading in their vehicles for EVs from other manufacturers, suggesting increased competition and changing consumer preferences within the electric vehicle market.
