EV Sales in Europe
European electric vehicle (EV) sales have experienced a remarkable surge in the early months of 2025, despite facing challenges from a significant decline in Tesla registrations. In January and February, the total number of EV registrations across the European Union (EU), the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), and the United Kingdom (UK) reached 330,584 units. This marks a substantial increase of 31.4% compared to the same period last year, showcasing a positive trend in the adoption of electric vehicles.
Tesla’s Decline
While the overall EV market flourishes, Tesla has faced a notable downturn. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), Tesla’s registrations in the EU, EFTA, and UK plummeted by 42.6% in the first two months of 2025. In February alone, Tesla sold only 16,888 vehicles, a significant drop from 28,182 units sold in the same month last year. Cumulatively, Tesla’s sales fell from 46,343 units in early 2024 to just 26,619 units this year, illustrating a stark contrast to the growing competition from brands like BMW, MG, and Renault.
Overall Market Trends
Despite the overall automotive market in Europe contracting by 3% in the EU and 2.6% across the EU, EFTA, and UK, electric vehicles have emerged as the standout performers. In the EU alone, EV sales increased by 28.4% during January and February, while traditional gasoline and diesel vehicles saw significant declines. Gas-powered car registrations dropped by 21.9%, while diesel vehicles saw a decrease of 27.5%. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) registrations also fell by 3.4%, highlighting the shifting consumer preferences towards fully electric and hybrid models.
