Ford made headlines when it completed the shipment of 140,000 complimentary Tesla charging adapters to its U.S. electric vehicle (EV) customers. To highlight the adapter’s robustness, Ford released a video showcasing an F-150 Lightning driving over it. The adapter, designed to bridge the gap between the North American Charging System (NACS) and the Combined Charging System (CCS), emerged from the ordeal appearing unscathed. This adapter allows Ford EV owners to access Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network across the United States, significantly expanding their charging options.
Initially, these NACS to CCS adapters were provided free to Ford EV customers. Now, they are available for purchase at $200, though potential tariffs could influence the final price. The development of this adapter was a collaborative effort between Ford and Lectron, a prominent EV accessory manufacturer, emphasizing the importance of reliable and safe EV charging solutions.

Engineering for Safety and Durability
Lectron CEO and founder Christopher Maiwald highlighted the difference in design priorities between aftermarket products and those co-developed with automakers. “In the aftermarket, you optimize for value. On the [automaker] side, you’re optimizing for durability that goes above and beyond,” he explained. This emphasis on durability is evident in the Ford NACS to CCS adapter’s design and testing.
The Ford adapter features a thicker pin that connects to the CCS charging port, providing a more secure connection. Additionally, a second interlocking pin was added to prevent accidental cable detachment during charging. Tom Moloughney from InsideEVs’ State of Charge YouTube channel detailed these features in a video, emphasizing the added safety measures. According to Maiwald, the adapter underwent rigorous drop tests that led to component changes. For instance, stainless steel was chosen over zinc alloy for the latches to enhance durability. The interlocking mechanism also presented a waterproofing challenge, requiring Lectron to engineer a seal that could withstand at least 10,000 cycles while maintaining an IP67 waterproof rating.
Ford’s promotional video showcased extreme testing conditions, including freezing the adapter to -40 degrees Celsius, dropping it from significant heights, and running it over with a 6,000-pound F-150 Lightning. The adapter reportedly continued to function without issue after each test. While these tests demonstrate the adapter’s potential durability, real-world usage will ultimately determine its long-term reliability.

Lectron’s Role and Adapter Safety
Lectron also produces its own aftermarket adapter, the Vortex, designed to allow EVs with CCS ports to charge at Tesla Superchargers. An early version of the Vortex adapter was recalled due to the Supercharger cable potentially detaching during DC fast charging if excessive force was applied. Disconnecting a DC fast-charging cable mid-session poses significant safety risks due to the high voltage and current involved. Such a disconnect could damage pins and connectors, potentially exposing users to hazardous conditions.
Lectron addressed this issue with a design fix that prevents the cable from being detached unless the charging session is properly terminated from the car or via the Tesla cable button. This modification ensures a safer charging experience. Despite the initial challenges, the development of the Ford adapter, in collaboration with Lectron, demonstrates a commitment to safety and reliability. The Ford adapter includes design modifications and redundancies beyond the standard Lectron unit, highlighting the extensive engineering involved.
It is crucial to use certified, manufacturer-recommended EV accessories, such as adapters made by Tesla or Lectron. Purchasing cheap, low-quality adapters from unverified sources can be dangerous, as these products may not meet necessary safety standards. Maiwald emphasized that products bearing a company logo undergo extensive testing to meet the requirements of automakers like Ford, GM, and Mercedes-Benz.
