Rivian’s New Update Boosts Charging & Preconditioning

Manual Preconditioning: A New Level of Control

Rivian is rolling out a significant over-the-air (OTA) software update for its R1T and R1S models, introducing manual preconditioning for DC fast charging. This update empowers owners to prepare their high-voltage battery packs for optimal charging, regardless of whether they’re using the vehicle’s built-in navigation system. The feature is available for both Gen 1 and Gen 2 versions of these adventure-ready EVs.

Previously, preconditioning was only triggered when using the integrated navigation to route to a charging station. Now, drivers have the flexibility to initiate the process manually, ensuring the battery is at the ideal temperature for rapid charging, even when navigating with external apps or simply planning a quick top-up. A clear visual banner will indicate whether the battery is warming or cooling, and when the preconditioning process is complete, providing real-time feedback to the driver.

Enhanced Energy App: Smarter Charging Insights

The 2025.18 software version brings a revamped Energy App, designed to provide Rivian owners with more detailed insights into their vehicle’s energy consumption and charging habits. The app is now divided into two distinct sections: the Energy Monitor Tab and the Charging Tab.

The Energy Monitor Tab offers a comprehensive energy graph, breaking down electricity usage by system over a specified period. This allows drivers to understand how different vehicle functions, such as climate control, driving, and auxiliary systems, contribute to overall energy consumption. The Charging Tab introduces a smart charging level reminder, particularly useful for long road trips. By setting a destination in the navigation system, the car will intelligently calculate and advise the driver when to unplug, ensuring sufficient charge to reach the destination without unnecessary overcharging. This feature promotes efficient charging practices and reduces charging stop durations.

Faster Charging Speeds: Optimizing Battery Performance

In addition to enhanced control and monitoring, this OTA update brings tangible improvements to charging speeds for specific Rivian R1T and R1S configurations. First-generation models equipped with the Max Pack battery will experience reduced DC fast charging times when charging from 10% to 80%.

Second-generation models also benefit from this update. Those with the Max Pack and Standard Pack batteries see similar reductions in 10% to 80% DC fast charging times. Furthermore, Gen 2 vehicles with the Large Pack battery now boast an improved peak charge rate of 215 kilowatts, resulting in faster overall charging and quicker 10% to 80% top-ups. These charging improvements are a result of Rivian’s optimization of battery temperatures through advanced simulations and individual cell enhancements, rigorously tested and validated in both simulated and real-world conditions. While these advancements may not be revolutionary, as similar features have been available in other EVs like Tesla for some time, they represent a commitment from Rivian to continuously enhance the user experience for its customers. More exciting features are on the horizon, including vehicle-to-home functionality, enabling R1S and R1T owners to utilize their vehicle’s battery to power their homes, further solidifying Rivian’s position in the EV market.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Rivian models are compatible with the new software update?

The software update is compatible with both the Gen 1 and Gen 2 versions of the Rivian R1T and R1S models.

How do I manually precondition the battery for DC fast charging?

The manual preconditioning feature can be accessed through the vehicle’s infotainment system. Once enabled, a banner will display the battery’s warming or cooling status and notify you upon completion.

Where can I find the Energy Monitor Tab and Charging Tab?

These tabs are located within the updated Energy App in your Rivian’s infotainment system.

How does the smart charging level reminder work?

When a destination is set in the navigation system, the vehicle calculates the optimal charging level needed to reach the destination. It then provides a reminder of when to unplug to avoid overcharging and save time.
