They share a platform, a battery, a factory, and even a screen. Yet the Cupra Born and the VW ID.3 GTX fight very differently—and the gap between them reveals more about VW Group’s strategy than either car admits.
Both cars sit on the MEB platform, use the same 79 kWh net battery, and are built at the same Zwickau plant. Both claim WLTP range above 600 km, both carry a 12.9-inch display running Android Automotive, and both are rear-wheel drive. On paper, this is the same car wearing two badges.
That makes the differences sharper, not smaller. VW tunes the ID.3 GTX for balance and comfort; Cupra tunes the Born VZ for response and stance. Same parts, different philosophy—and VW Group is happy to sell you either.
The flagship Born VZ makes 326 hp versus the ID.3 GTX’s 286 hp—both deliver 545 Nm of torque to the rear axle. The Born also charges slightly faster at 185 kW versus 175 kW, and edges the 0–100 km/h sprint at 5.6 seconds vs 5.7. Boot space is identical at 385 liters. None of these are night-and-day gaps, but they compound into a character difference buyers feel.

Which one actually wins?
If you value the driving edge and coverage, the Born is the better buy. If dealer access and brand familiarity matter more, the ID.3 holds its own.
This isn’t really two cars competing—it’s one platform monetized twice. VW Group uses Cupra to capture the buyer who finds VW too plain, without cannibalizing the core brand. It’s the same playbook as Audi-within-VW, executed one tier down. For buyers, the upside is genuine choice; the downside is that “shopping around” mostly means picking a trim of the same car.
Against outsiders, both are credible mainstream EVs—but neither matches the charging curve of an 800V native platform, and both start north of $40,000, which keeps them out of the truly affordable tier that Slate and the forthcoming midsize trucks are targeting.
Mechanically, yes—same MEB platform, battery, motor architecture, and factory. But Cupra applies different power calibration, chassis tuning, and a longer warranty, so the driving character and ownership terms genuinely differ.
VW’s broader dealer and service network typically supports stronger resale for the ID.3, while the Born’s sharper image helps it hold interest among enthusiasts. Neither is a depreciation standout versus Tesla or Hyundai.
It’s competitive for a 400V car but below the 800V leaders (Hyundai/Kia at 230–350 kW). A 10–80% session runs roughly 30 minutes. Fine for road trips, not class-leading.
If maximum warranty and a livelier drive matter, the Born VZ. If you want the widest service footprint and familiar branding, the ID.3 GTX. Both deliver the same real-world range.
