
BYD Atto 2 DM-i Review: Why It’s So Cheap

The Atto 2 DM-i is the car that makes that statistic make sense: a compact SUV that can do your daily commute on electric power (up to 55 miles EV range) and your holiday road trip on petrol (up to 621 miles total), all for the price of a mid-spec Ford Puma.

What Makes the Atto 2 DM-i So Cheap?
Three things separate the Atto 2 DM-i from more expensive PHEVs:
BYD’s Vertical Integration
BYD makes its own batteries (Blade LFP), motors, power electronics, and semiconductors. No supplier margins. The Atto 2’s 18 kWh Blade battery costs less per kWh than anything on the open market.
DM-i Simplicity
The petrol engine is a 1.5L I4 running at fixed efficient RPMs as a generator. No complex multi-speed transmission, no heavy drivetrain components. It’s a series hybrid first, parallel when needed.
Scale Economics
BYD sold 4 million+ NEVs globally in 2025. The Atto 2 (known as Yuan Up in China) shares platforms and components with several other models, spreading development costs across millions of units.

DM-i Technology: How It Works
DM-i stands for Dual Mode – intelligent. It’s BYD’s electric-first hybrid system:
- Electric-first drive: The 122 kW electric motor is the primary power source. Acceleration is smooth, instant, and quiet—just like a pure EV.
- Petrol engine as generator: The 1.5L I4 engine runs at its most efficient RPM to charge the battery when needed. It rarely drives the wheels directly.
- Series/Parallel modes: At higher speeds, the system can combine electric + engine power directly for maximum efficiency on motorways.
- Result: An EV experience with zero range anxiety. Up to 621 miles total range, with a weighted fuel consumption of 470 mpg in WLTP testing.
The 18 kWh Blade LFP battery is the key difference from most PHEVs. Competitors typically use 10-12 kWh packs that deliver 25-32 miles of EV range. The Atto 2 DM-i’s 55 miles means most UK drivers can do their entire weekly commute on electric alone.
